'' it is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot have both'' - Niccolo Machiavelli
Tom the clearly dominiate person in his relationship with daisy - or any ; seems to find pleasure in being in control and still attaing a holesome family. Daisy his powerless wife is stuck in her reality when she is aware that her husband is cheating on her ut continues to stay by her side because during that era [ early 1900's] it was a taboo to leave your husband even over his infedalitys. But little does she know that Tom is betraying her with a lower class women who he also mistreats and abuses her. Fitzgerald clearly demostrates that Tom is a dominate person who likes to stay in control in any means neccesary . Sometimes its better to be feared than be loved because when your feared people tend to respect you more and when your loved people tend to step all over you.
